A New Alphabet for Humanity

Brief summary

An A-Z of social and emotional vocabulary to make the world a better place.

My comments

Leesa McGregor has written a wonderful A-Z book, empowering children to be kind and compassionate towards themselves, others and the planet. Every page gives a carefully written explanation of each value, and is accompanied by a beautiful illustration by Daniela Sosa, who you might recognise from Love You to Pieces Beautiful Monster and the Agent Zaiba series. For every book sold they plant a tree, which I think is such a lovely idea!

Unity is knowing we are all connected to each other as one big human family. Together we can change the world.

Leesa McGregor

I’d like to give Impact Humanity Publishing a big thank you for sending me this book. A New Alphabet For Humanity linked in perfectly with some of the other books that I used in my class this year, echoing the sentiment that children are never too young to make a difference. Leesa McGregor’s book inspired my class to create their own A-Z books during our first week back, linking them with our school values and classroom ethos, which was such a lovely way to develop children’s vocabulary.

Class comments

I teach primary 6/7, so this is obviously not a book that children in my class are likely to pick up to read by themselves. However, where this book shines is as a visual aid to go along with health and wellbeing lessons and in that light, I can see there being a benefit to having this book in every class. At the back of the book, Leesa McGregor has written some fantastic empowering questions, which was a thoughtful addition, helping to encourage meaningful discussion.

Points to consider in class

  • This book doesn’t contain anything that would be an issue in class.

If my free resources, posts and book reviews have helped you in some small way, it would be lovely if you could support me by buying me a coffee, or a book to read my baby Adaline. Please don’t feel like you have to though!

Wood effect vinyl

I've used this vinyl as display backing for 7 years and it still looks like new! Check out my Instagram to see pictures of it in my classroom

Chalk pens

My go-to chalk pens. I use them on my tuff trays and the children love writing on the tables or windows with them. They wash off really easily

Carpet spots

Not sure what I did before these carpet spots. I use the chalk pens above to write the children’s names on them and they can be easily moved around the carpet. Also great for lining up!

Dry erase pockets

I use these dry wipe pockets all the time. Pop and activity inside, children complete it with whiteboard pen and it can be easily wiped off. Perfect for reluctant or less confident writers

Audible

Audible is perfect for child friendly podcasts and stories in the class and you can even access downloadable activities. I like to listen to an audiobook or podcast on the way to or from work to switch off too

Amazon Prime

It has been so handy having next day delivery when I've needed something for school. You can check out my Amazon Teacher store for all my teacher essentials and books for the classroom. You can get a 30-day free trial too
